Why are we stuck on death tolls? 39 here in a terrorist attack, 101 there in a Mexico earthquake — it’s all in a day of Mother Earth. Why does it matter? To sell a news story? Yeah, probably.

“It was most lives lost in an L-1011 flying at 3,500 feet over Seecaucas,NJ in a thunderstorm since 1989.” Sounds familiar because it is.

They were looking for body counts in Vietnam a gazillion years ago, so our
Marine company commander ordered us to cut the left ear off any Vietcong killed to put on his “Ear Board,” at company HQ in Phu Bai.

It didn’t make the news until I told the NY Times about it. I guess there weren’t any records to break.
